Is This Really The Future of Magazines or Why Didn’t They Just Use HTML 5? A scathing critique of the new Wired iPad app, which weighs in at 500MB per issue due to storing every single page as two static PNG images—one for landscape and one for portrait mode. “The only real differentiation between the Wired application and a multimedia CD-ROM is the delivery mechanism: you download it via the App Store versus buying a CD-ROM”.
WildlifeNearYou talk at £5 app, and being Wired (not Tired)
Two quick updates about WildlifeNearYou. First up, I gave a talk about the site at £5 app, my favourite Brighton evening event which celebrates side projects and the joy of Making Stuff. I talked about the site’s genesis on a fort, crowdsourcing photo ratings, how we use Freebase and DBpedia and how integrating with Flickr’s machine tags gave us a powerful location API for free. Repeat after me: supporting OpenID does not mean you can’t require additional registration details through a signup form.

Thanks to OpenID and OAuth, the Open Social Web is Beginning to Emerge. My blog’s OpenID powered watchlist and “your comments” features got a write-up on Wired! Nice to know that someone has noticed them.
Wired News: Web Startups Reboot ’London 2.0’. Crikey... the toungue-in-cheek name for our Rails/Django meetups has inspired a Wired article!
